The happiness of Chhath festival was overshadowed by mourning in Kodai village of Mardah police station area of Qasimabad tehsil of Ghazipur. Achhe Lal Chauhan (55) died of drowning while taking bath in the pond during Chhath Puja late Thursday evening. The villagers hurriedly pulled him out of the pond.

On the occasion of Dala Chhath, a huge crowd of devotees had gathered at the pond of Kodai village. Achhe Lal Chauhan’s wife Manju Devi and his daughter Poonam had observed the fast of Chhath. He had come with his family to offer Arghya. After the puja, Achhe Lal went into the pond to take a bath, but went deeper and started drowning. Seeing him drowning, the villagers present there immediately jumped into the water and somehow pulled him out.
The family immediately took Achhelal to Mardah Community Health Centre, but the doctors declared him dead. This tragic incident caused a wave of mourning in the entire village. Achhe Lal’s wife and daughter are in sad condition and the villagers are also saddened by this accident. The police have taken the body into their custody and sent it for post-mortem.
