This initiative aims to broaden access to IIT Kanpur’s educational offerings.

The alternative admission route is limited to five departments.

IIT Kanpur has introduced an exciting new admission pathway that allows students to enrol in select courses without needing to pass the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). This initiative aims to broaden access to IIT Kanpur’s educational offerings and is particularly encouraging for those aspiring to study at the prestigious institute. Under this scheme, students can gain admission based on their performance in competitive exams like the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology Olympiads. This provides a unique opportunity for students with strong subject expertise in these areas to join IIT Kanpur, even if they haven’t cleared JEE Mains or JEE Advanced.

This program offers a valuable alternative for those who excel in science Olympiads and are looking for ways to study at an IIT. With this scheme, IIT Kanpur hopes to nurture talent by recognising students’ skills through various competitive achievements, ultimately making quality education more accessible. IIT Kanpur is now offering admission to select BTech and BS programs based on Olympiad scores, as reported by various media sources. Currently, this alternative admission route is limited to five departments:

  1. Biological Sciences and Bioengineering

  2. Computer Science and Engineering

  3. Chemistry

  4. Economics

  5. Mathematics and Statistics

This initiative allows students with strong performances in Olympiads to bypass the JEE Mains and JEE Advanced exams, providing another pathway to IIT Kanpur for students with exceptional subject expertise.

For more information and specific details on the admission criteria, visit the official website of IIT Kanpur at www.iitk.ac.in.

IIT Kanpur’s new admission scheme specifies different Olympiad requirements for each department:

  • Computer Science and Engineering: Admission is based on scores from the Mathematics and Informatics Olympiads.

  • Chemistry: Only Chemistry Olympiad scores are considered.

  • Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics: Mathematics Olympiad ranks are the basis for admission.

After shortlisting based on Olympiad rankings, students will need to pass a written exam, separate from the JEE, and may also face an interview in some cases. This process aims to provide a tailored assessment pathway for students, focusing on their strengths in specific subjects.
