Sanju Samson spoke about the rich vein of form he currently in, stating that he feels grateful but would like to keep his feet grounded.
Sanju Samson set Durban’s Kingsmead ablaze with a scintillating century as India locked horns with South Africa in the first T20I on Friday. He notched the triple figures off just 47 balls in what was the fastest century by an Indian batter against the Proteas in the shortest format of the game. Sanju amassed 107 off 50 balls before heading back to the dressing room. His eventful knock comprised 7 fours and 10 sixes, equaling former captain Rohit Sharma’s tally of most sixes in a T20 International.
It was Samson’s second consecutive T20I century that helped India post 202 for 8 against South Africa after being asked to bat first. Speaking about his innings in Durban, the 29-year-old said he was in a ‘zone’ and just went with the flow.
“I was in a zone, it was automatically flowing, so I let it flow. It’s a good question actually, if the ball is there to be hit, go for it. Focus on one ball at a time and that helps. The wicket does play a big role here, extra bounce and coming from India we do take time to understand the wicket,” Samson told the broadcasters during the innings break.
“There’s a huge wind blowing from one end and their bowlers bowled very well, our bowlers too would like to copy from them,” he added.
Samson further spoke about the rich vein of form he currently in, stating that he feels grateful but would like to keep his feet grounded.
“If I think a lot I will get emotional. I waited for this moment for 10 years, I’m very happy, grateful and blessed. But I would like to keep my feet on the ground, be in the moment and enjoy,” he added.
Once Samson was dismissed, India could manage only 35 runs in the last five overs, which could cost them dearly in the long run. His performance raised visions of a score of close to 250 but pacers Gerald Coetzee (3/37 in 4 overs) and Marco Jansen (1/24 in 4 overs) bowled brilliantly at the death to not only get wickets but also slip in a generous number of dot balls to curtail the damage inflicted by Samson during the first 15 overs.
