Jose Mourinho is ‘targeting’ the manager’s role at Newcastle United if Eddie Howe leaves St James Park.
Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly eyeing a return to the Premier League. Mourinho has been making headlines since he arrived in Turkey earlier this year. He recently called out the Super Lig in a public conference. Amid all the drama, it is being speculated that the Portuguese coach is currently keen on an opportunity in England. The Guardian has now reported that Mourinho is ‘targeting’ the manager’s role at Newcastle United if Eddie Howe leaves St James Park. The report claims that the Fenerbahce coach sees this opportunity as his best chance to land another job in the English top flight.
Jose Mourinho is believed to be keeping a close tab on any developments at Newcastle United. He met with the club’s chairman Yasir al-Rumayyan at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in March and has since maintained a connection. As for Eddie Howe, the Newcastle United manager is not under immediate pressure. Following a difficult start to the season, he oversaw the club’s consecutive wins over Chelsea and Arsenal. However, Eddie is not guaranteed long-term job security as the club owners want their side to play in the Champions League. Mourinho could end up being the last piece of the puzzle they need to crack a place in the European competition again.
Jose Mourinho has already expressed his frustrations in the Super Lig as he went on a rant after Fenerbahce’s 3-2 win over Trabzonspor last week. Speaking in the press conference, Mourinho claimed he wouldn’t have taken the Fenerbahce job if he had been informed ‘the whole truth’ by the club’s officials. “Who wants to watch this Turkish league abroad? They have the Premier League, they have the French League, they have the German League, they have the Portuguese League, they have the Dutch League. Why should they see this? I didn’t,” he said.
Speaking further, Jose Mourinho claimed that the Super Lig smelled bad and was ‘too grey’. “I was told when the president met me when the director met me, and even before that, that I even met other important clubs and respectful clubs in Turkey. But I couldn’t believe that this was the dimension. It’s too grey, it’s too dark, it smells bad. But that’s my job and I will give everything to my job, to my club,” he concluded
This long tirade from Jose Mourinho led to the Fenerbahce manager being punished by the Turkish Football Federation with a one-game ban. This penalty could further motivate Mourinho to quit the Turkish League.
