Such has been the impact of talented top-order batter Prithvi Shaw’s dipping stocks that even former Australia captain Greg Chappell took the pain of reaching out to the India cricketer and motivate him with an inspiring letter. The letter came days after Shaw lost his place in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad with reports claiming the call was taken due to the young batter’s fitness concerns and general conduct.

Shaw reportedly has started working towards his fitness, as per a report in mid-day, with the 25-year-old doing sprints and running drills for over half-an-hour on a track near MCA-BKC ground where Mumbai were facing Odisha in their Ranji Trophy clash on Thursday as Mumbai Cricket Association’s trainer Amogh Pandit kept a close watch.

Shaw slammed a century on his Test debut in 2018 raising hopes of a bright future, but his India career has nosedived due to various reasons including form, fitness and disciplinary issues.

In a letter published by The Times of India, Chappell, a former India head coach, reminded Shaw about the setbacks suffered by some of the greats of the game.

“Remember, setbacks are a part of every great athlete’s story,” Chappell wrote. “Even legends like Don Bradman experienced being dropped and having to fight their way back. What made them great was not avoiding challenges, but how they responded to them.”

Chappell cited his own example how after being dropped he was forced to review every aspect of his game and approach.

“I learned that my attitude, resilience, and willingness to improve mattered more than raw talent alone. I realized that I often got myself out by letting distractions or self-doubt interfere, and that wasn’t going to change unless I took full responsibility,” Chappell wrote.

Chappell said the latest setback could become a turning point for Shaw’s career.

“It’s natural to feel frustrated and perhaps a bit uncertain, but I want you to know that these moments are often the turning points for athletes, helping to shape both their careers and their character. I remember watching you play for India’s under-19 team, where you showcased an extraordinary talent and a spark that made it clear you were among the most exciting young cricketers of your time,” he wrote.

Those of us who recognize your potential are still kneely watching your journey, knowing that the best is yet to come”, he added.
