A simple stop for orange juice at a gas station recently transformed a family’s life in North Carolina, US. Kelly Spahr, from Kernersville, was at Quality Mart on Piney Grove Road when lottery tickets caught her attention while buying fruit juice. To try her luck, she decided to buy a $20 (approximately Rs 1600) ticket and to her surprise, it turned out to be a $250,000 (approximately Rs 2 crore) grand prize. The woman explained that this win would make a big difference for her family. “It’s a life changing amount for us,” she said, claiming that it would open up many new opportunities for them. The ticket Spahr bought was from the holiday themed Merry Multiplier game.
The woman revealed that she picked the ticket because it looked strange, as the folding part of the ticket convinced her to buy it. Sharing her excitement with the North Carolina Education Lottery, Spahr said, “It’s a life changing amount of money for us. It really helps us out a lot. When I was at the gas station I saw that there were new tickets out so I decided to try them. The ticket has a folding part on it which is what sold me on it. This just opened up some more doors for us. It’s nice to know that big wins like this really do happen.”
Kelly Spahr claimed the grand prize at the lottery headquarters on November 5 and after taxes were deducted, she ended up taking home around $178,756 (approximately Rs 1.5 crore). As per the officials, there were still two $250,000 prizes left to be claimed, along with the chance to win 10 prizes of $10,000 (approximately Rs 8 lakh) and 100 prizes of $500 (approximately Rs 42,000).
Earlier, a man in Missouri won a $3 million (approximately Rs 25 crore) lottery prize after stopping at a grocery store to grab lunch, according to the Missouri Lottery. He had forgotten his lunch at home and received a call from his wife about it. While at the store, he decided to buy a Millionaire Bucks ticket. When he scanned it later, the machine displayed the message, ‘Lottery Winner.’
Speaking with the lottery officials, the winner explained that he usually doesn’t buy $30 (approximately Rs 2500) tickets but decided to give it a try since he had $60 (approximately Rs 5000). He didn’t expect to win and was shocked when he saw the amount with all the zeros. He also mentioned that he enjoys playing pranks, which made it harder for his wife to believe the news at first.
