After Landslide Victory, Donald Trump Hints At Third Term In White House – News18
Last Updated:
Speaking to House Republicans, Trump joked about a third term, raising eyebrows over potential challenges to presidential term limits.
US President-elect Donald Trump suggested Wednesday that he could be open to a constitution-breaking third term in office, in remarks made to House Republicans ahead of the start of his second term.
“I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say, ‘He’s good, we got to figure something else,'” Trump provocatively told his audience in a downtown Washington hotel, drawing some laughter from supporters.
A third presidential term is constitutionally prohibited in the US by the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, which restricts presidents to two elected terms.
The amendment can be overturned but it would require a constitutional change. It will need approval by two-thirds of both houses of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states, according to the Voice Of America.
Trump made a triumphant return to the White House and is meeting President Joe Biden, in the Republican’s first visit since departing under a torrent of scandal nearly four years ago.
“It’s always nice to win,” Trump said while meeting GOP leaders in Washington.
He won 312 electoral votes to Democrat Kamala Harris’ 226.
He also got a standing ovation from House GOP leaders gathered at the Washington hotel on Wednesday.
