The birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, is celebrated as Children’s Day on November 14. A champion of children’s education and rights, Nehru was honoured posthumously in 1964 when the government passed a resolution designating this day as Children’s Day. This act aimed to commemorate his significant contribution to the welfare of children in society.

Apart from his political achievements, Nehru was loved by children who affectionately called him ‘Chacha Nehru’. A firm believer in children’s abilities, he also laid the foundation of the Indian Institute of Technology for their growth.

Nehru was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in 1889 in a rich Kashmiri Pandit family. He was one of the greatest Indian leaders who fought for the country’s freedom and was among the men who laid the foundation of modern India. His father Motilal Nehru was a lawyer and an important leader of the Freedom movement for India.

He received his early education at Harrow School and further studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Nehru was already a prominent decision-maker in the Indian National Congress and engaged in numerous campaigns against British rule such as the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Quit India Movement.
