IPL 2025 Auction Updates: Information has come out that the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction for the 2025 season will feature two sets of marquee players. The event will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told the franchises, who are gearing up for the auctions, two sets of 8-9 marquee players would be up for grabs. Each player has a base price of INR 2 crores and is likely to be the most sought-after group in the auction. In the previous mega-auction in 2022, there was only one set of marquee players but in the big auctions in 2018 and 2014, there were two sets.
Several Indian and overseas stars Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jos Buttler, Arshdeep Singh, and Mitchell Starc will be amongst those with the highest base price in the upcoming auctions. As the first two sets of players are accounted for, a major chunk of the purse for each franchise would likely have been spent.
The bidding order and list of marquee players will be released by the BCCI soon. In a recent release by the Indian cricket board, it was revealed that 1574 names of which 1165 Indians and 409 overseas players registered themselves for the upcoming auctions.
In addition, the BCCI asked franchises to send in their suggestions for players that they want to be seen in the auction as well. The teams had a deadline of November 12 to share the names they wanted in the final list of players.
Assuming all 10 franchises fill out their squad of 25 members, 204 players could be sold, and the respective franchises would spend INR 641 crores from the remaining purse amounts over two days. The Punjab Kings who retained only Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh have the biggest purse at INR 110.5 crores and will likely look to establish control in the bidding process.
The upcoming auction will be key for each franchise as it provides the best opportunity to bolster and rebuild their side, which could serve them well for the coming seasons as well. It also becomes a chance to unearth new talents while also shelling out big bucks for the best players of the current generation.
