Mallika Sagar is set to continue her role as the auctioneer in the upcoming event for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 Mega-Auction being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25.
Who is Mallika Sagar?
Mallika is an art collector from Mumbai and a consultant to Modern and Contemporary Indian art. She is also a partner with the Art India consultant firm. She holds vast experience in conducting auctions with Pundoles (an art gallery) in Mumbai. Regarding sport-related events, Mallika also conducted the Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) players’ auction in 2021 and multiple editions of the Women’s Premier League auctions too.
Her career took off at Christie’s in 2001 when she became the first woman auctioneer of Indian Origin over there.
Mallika was also the first Indian individual to conduct an auction in an Indian T20 league during the 2023 season. Over the years, the likes of Richard Madley and Hugh Edmeades have been some of the familiar faces during the IPL players’ auction.
All You Need to Know About IPL 2025 Mega-Auction
All 10 franchises will look at the upcoming event as a shot at rebuilding or bolstering their squad for the coming seasons. A total of 46 players have been retained across all the franchises and 204 slots will be filled at mega-auction, set to be held later this month.
A major talking point regarding the event is the presence of a fairly large number of modern-day stars who have not been retained by their franchise. This includes the likes of Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan and many other Indian and overseas players that could be up for grabs.
A total of INR 641.5 crores could be spent to help the franchises recruit the best talents in the total pool of 1574 players. Amongst all the sides, the Punjab Kings have the biggest purse with INR 110.5 crores and will be expected to dominate in the upcoming event.
Franchises that have banked heavily on their retentions would have to navigate through the challenges of having a lesser purse amount and focus on getting players at a cheap price to ensure that they can bolster their squad while spending efficiently to ensure they come out with an even better squad from before.
