Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan is gearing up for a return to professional cricket. The southpaw will be seen in action in the inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). Dhawan will play for Karnali Yaks in the eight-team T20I competition, scheduled to begin on November 30. The 38-year-old announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket earlier in August. He was last seen in action for Punjab Kings in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He picked up an unfortunate ankle injury midway through the tournament that ruled him out of the rest of the season.

Dhawan is now set to begin a new chapter of his career, featuring in the 2024 NPL. Karnali Yaks broke the news of his signing via a social media post. “Karnali Yaks is bringing the fierce energy of ‘Gabbar’ himself, Shikhar Dhawan, to the Nepal Premier League! With his dynamic style and experience, he’s ready to shake things up. Brace yourselves because Gabbar has arrived,” the franchise shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Dhawan recently met with the Karnali Yaks officials to sign the contract. Donning the team’s jersey, the legendary opener was captured smilingly posing alongside some delegates of the franchise, including owner Jhanak Dutt Khanal.

Karnali dropped those pictures online with the caption– “Excited to team up with the remarkable Shikhar Dhawan, bringing momentum and passion to the Karnali Yaks! Ready to raise the game together and make every moment count.”

Apart from Shikhar Dhawan, some other foreign stars such as Martin Guptill, James Neesham, Ben Cutting and Unmukt Chand will also feature in the opening season of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The T20 tournament, organised by the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) will continue till December 21.

About his retirement call, Shikhar Dhawan said in a recent interview with the PTI, “I didn’t want to play domestic cricket, which I started playing at the age of 18 or 19 and I didn’t have that inspiration from inside to play that (form of) cricket. If I look back, the last two years of my cricketing career, I wasn’t playing much international cricket and was playing IPL to IPL. So, I wasn’t playing much of cricket overall.”

Dhawan has not been retained by Punjab Kings for the 2025 IPL. He will feature in the mega auction, set to be held in Jeddah on November 24 and 25.
