With Virat Kohli’s form coming under the scanner ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia, the former Indian cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar remains confident in the batting star to come back stronger and deliver once again in Perth and Adelaide, which has been a happy hunting ground for Kohli in his long career.

Gavaskar speaking to Star Sports, reflected on his past successes and remains confident that Kohli will be keen to get back to his best run-scoring form against India’s fiercest rivals, the mighty Aussies.

The Indian batting legend also feels that Kohli’s lack of runs in the New Zealand series will also give additional motivation to perform and shut down his critics by doing what he does best; scoring the big runs for India.

“Because he hasn’t got runs against New Zealand, he’ll be very, very hungry. Even in that Adelaide Test match, where in the second innings we got all out for 36, in the first innings, Kohli got 70 plus, if I recall correctly, before being run out. He’s consistently performed at Adelaide, so it’s a familiar ground for him,” Gavaskar shared.

“And before Adelaide, it’s Perth, where he played one of the finest Test centuries in 2018-19. Terrific hundred. Having performed on these grounds, he’ll feel that extra bit of confidence. Of course, you need a bit of luck at the start, but if he gets off to a good start, he will get big runs,” he added.

Gavaskar reflecting on Kohli’s record in Perth and Adelaide, remains optimistic that the 36-year-old will be able to replicate his past heroics Down Under and help India get a few wins on the board.

India will be without Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in the first Test. The onus will be on Kohli to lead the batting unit to ensure that their chances of securing a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) for the 2023-25 cycle are alive. For India to get a guaranteed spot in the final, they would have to win four and draw one of the upcoming five Tests against Australia.

As the series approaches, all eyes will be on Kohli, who will look to bounce back with his trademark resilience and continue his fine record in Australia.
