During his 41-run knock against Australia in the 3rd T20I on Monday, Babar broke Virat Kohli’s record of 4188 runs in T20Is to take No. 2 position in the leading run scorers list.
Star Pakistani batter Babar Azam, who stepped down from captaincy last month, scored 41 runs from 28 runs for Men in Green in the third T20I of the three-match series played against Australia at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Monday (November 18) but failed to help his side win the match and avoid whitewash. Despite Babar’s impactful knock, the visitors could only manage to post a total of 117 runs on the board for the loss of 10 wickets in 18.1 overs, and the Josh Inglis-led side chased down the target of 118 runs in just 11.2 overs to win the match by 7 wickets.
For the hosts, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis hammered unbeaten 61 runs from just 27 balls, whereas captain Inglis returned back to the pavilion after scoring 27 runs.
During his 41-run knock in the third T20I played on Monday, 30-year-old Babar broke Virat Kohli’s record of 4188 runs to take the No. 2 position in the list of batters with most runs in the shortest format of the game. Kohli finished his T20I career with 4188 runs in 125 matches for India, whereas Babar has 4192 runs to his name now in 126 matches.

The overall record of scoring most runs in T20Is is in the name of India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma. The 37-year-old right-handed batter played 159 T20I matches for India and scored 4231 runs. Rohit made his T20I debut for India in September 2007 and called time on his career after India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2024 final.
Babar, who is not picked in Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Zimbabwe, will have a chance to break Rohit’s record and become the leading run scorer in T20Is during the all-format tour of South Africa next month.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to announce Pakistan’s squads for the away tour of South Africa, but it is expected that despite an ordinary show in Australia, Babar will manage to retain his place in the white-ball teams. But there are question marks over his selection in the Test team.
Babar, who served as Pakistan’s all-format captain from 2019 to 2023, was dropped from the Test team last month due to poor form, and in his absence, Pakistan went on to win two matches in a row.
