The security of camps, leaders and dignitaries, government offices, and other critical areas has been beefed up. Central intelligence agencies have been asked to provide actionable inputs for operations
Amid the fragile and tense situation in Manipur, security forces have been given a free hand to act against miscreants attempting to damage property or cause harm to others. They have been assigned a challenging task – from maintaining security of camps, houses and establishments to conducting operations, sources said.
According to sources, the security of camps, leaders and dignitaries, government offices, and other critical areas has been beefed up and will further be enhanced once troops arrive in the northeastern state. Central intelligence agencies, meanwhile, have been asked to provide actionable inputs for operations, the sources told News18.
A senior official in the state government said security forces have been instructed not to hesitate in acting against miscreants. “They have been given a free hand to maintain law and order, and peace in the state. In case of any property damage or harm to any individual, the forces are free to take action as necessary, depending on the situation. Additionally, force deployment will be planned once the troops arrive in Manipur,” the official said.
Sources said at least 7,000 troops will be deployed to Manipur, as the central government has decided to send in this number after assessing the situation in the state. Out of this, 50 companies will be from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and 20 from the Border Security Force (BSF).
Similarly, security at camps housing displaced local residents, for political leaders, at government offices, and others will be a priority. Sources further said security measures are already in place, and further deployment will occur once more troops arrive.
They said intelligence agencies have been tasked with providing information on hideouts of violent groups, as well as individuals aiding and supplying weapons, arms, and other materials to fuel violence in the state. Agencies have been instructed to closely coordinate with security forces to ensure that these inputs are translated into actionable operations, a senior official said.
The volatile situation in Manipur has forced even politicians to take steps to defend themselves as irate mobs attack them and torch their houses in a fresh wave of violence. So far, protesters have attacked the homes of 17 MLAs, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other ministers.
Public health engineering (PHE) minister and Khurai MLA Leishangthem Susindro Meitei has built a bunker in his house and kept weapons for self-defence.
