The program was inaugurated by chief guest BL Verma by lighting the lamp. After this, equipment worth about Rs 1.80 crore was distributed to 757 disabled beneficiaries selected by the Disabled Welfare Department. These included essential assistive devices like tricycles, crutches, hearing aids and wheelchairs.

Union Minister of State BL Verma said on this occasion, “I am confident that the assistive devices distributed today will fulfill the objective of making the disabled people self-reliant and they will be able to join the mainstream of the society.”

He further said that through the Arjun portal, persons with disabilities can now apply online for assistive devices, which has increased transparency and convenience in distribution.

BL Verma also told that the Central Government has started Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendras, which are expanding rapidly. From these centres, disabled people and senior citizens can avail the benefits of Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana and ADIP Yojana.

He said that since 2014-15, more than 17 thousand camps have been organized in which assistive devices worth Rs 2211 crore have been distributed to more than 30 lakh disabled people.

“2486 camps have been set up in Uttar Pradesh and equipment worth Rs 457 crore has been distributed to about 6 lakh beneficiaries,” the Union Minister said. Additionally, he also made an important announcement for the empowerment of students with disabilities, in which the minimum limit of disability for motorized tricycles and wheelchairs has now been reduced from 80 percent to 40 percent.
