Police said that the family has alleged the victim was murdered because she intended to vote for the BJP.

The body of a 23-year-old Dalit woman was found stuffed inside a sack in Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal town on Wednesday. Her family has accused a Samajwadi Party (SP) worker of pressuring her not to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming bypolls.

The police have arrested two men, Prashant Yadav and Mohan Katheria, following a complaint lodged by the woman’s father.

Vinod Kumar, the Mainpuri district police chief, said that the family has alleged the victim was murdered because she intended to vote for the BJP, NDTV reported.

According to the victim’s father, three days before her death, Prashant visited their home and asked the woman which party she planned to support in the bypolls. She responded that she would vote for the BJP as her family had received a house under the PM Awas Yojana. After that, Yadav reportedly threatened her, telling her to vote for the Samajwadi Party’s symbol, the cycle, instead. Her father claims that Yadav later killed her when she refused to comply.

UP BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, during a press conference, slammed the Samajwadi Party over the alleged murder of the woman.

Chaudhary also took to X, stating, “SP is trying to win the assembly by-election by spreading terror among the public on the basis of hooliganism, bullying, corruption and anarchy. The people of the state are well aware of the misdeeds of SP and will definitely take account of it.”

The Samajwadi Party has yet to issue an official response to the murder allegations.

The murder has sparked a political storm as by-elections are underway in nine assembly constituencies across the state. The constituencies going to the polls, including Karhal, are Katehari, Mirapur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan, Sisamau, Khair, Phulpur, and Kundarki. Votes will be counted on November 23.

Karhal was previously represented by Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav before he was elected to Parliament as the Kannauj MP.
