AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have announced their separation after 29 years of marriage. The Oscar-winning composer and Banu confirmed the news with a joint statement released by their lawyer, Vandana Shah, on Tuesday night.
AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, got married in 1995 through an arranged marriage. His mother, who was looking for a bride, first considered Saira’s younger sister, Meher, but once she met Saira, she knew she was the right choice. Saira had admired Rahman’s music before they met, and their bond grew from there. The couple shared a deep understanding and mutual respect. Rahman had earlier mentioned how they set clear expectations for their marriage beforehand to ensure they were on the same page. Their divorce came as a shocker to all his fans.
Not long back, actor Rahman, who is related to AR Rahman through marriage, shared a lighthearted story about how different he and the music composer are. He joked that while he’s the more outgoing one, A.R. Rahman is deeply dedicated and spiritual. He shared a funny anecdote from Rahman’s honeymoon: instead of spending time with his wife, Rahman was in another room practicing his veena late at night.
In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, the actor had said, “I remember, when he got married, he took my sister-in-law for the honeymoon to a hill station. I called them that night, it was just 12 or 1… She answered, she was sleeping already. I asked, ‘Where is Rahman’. She said, ‘I don’t know’. He was in another room, practicing his veena… He was composing something; he’s that kind of person.”
AR Rahman and Saira Banu have three kids together – two daughters, Khatija and Rahima, and a son named Ameen Rahman. While the family navigates this difficult time as the couple is headed for a divorce, Rahman remains dedicated to his music, working on projects like Chhaava, Thug Life, Lahore 1947 and Genie.
