Ariana Grande added that she watched Wicked as a Broadway musical when young and hence being a part of the film felt “like a homecoming” to her.
Ariana Grande revealed that she incorporated a personal touch into her upcoming film Wicked. Directed by Jon M Chu, the musical fantasy starring Cynthia Erivo in the lead will hit the big screens on November 22. Wicked is the on-screen adaptation of the same-titled stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman. The movie is also loosely based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. Grande plays the role of Glinda Upland aka the Good Witch while Erivo essays the character of Elphaba Thropp, the Wicked Witch. Ahead of Wicked’s grand premiere, Grande has opened up on how she had channelled her personal feelings into the project.
In an interaction with BBC, Ariana Grande said, “Losing someone you love is something we’ve all, unfortunately, had to experience – and sometimes we have the privilege to say goodbye and sometimes we don’t.” Grande was presumably hinting at two major tragedies in her life. The first one was the heartbreaking bombing incident at her Manchester concert in 2017 where as many as 22 concert-goers were killed and over 50 people were injured. As for the second tragic occurrence, Grande might be speaking about the death of her former partner Mac Miller in 2018. Reportedly, the rapper passed away from a drug overdose. He was found dead at his California home.
During the conversation, Ariana Grande added that she watched Wicked as a Broadway musical when young and hence being a part of the film felt “like a homecoming” to her. “This music has always brought such comfort and now being able to spend time with it and be trusted with it is the privilege of a lifetime,” she said.
Ariana Grande also highlighted her strong camaraderie with co-star Cynthia Erivo. According to the two-time Grammy award winner, she and Erivo got along well from the moment they were roped in for Wicked. “Cynthia invited me over and we hung out for five hours and we laughed and we cried and got to know each other,” disclosed Grande.
Apart from Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Wicked also features Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Peter Dinklage, Marissa Bode and Ethan Slater.
