India’s Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Kiran Rao, is on the Oscars 2025 International Feature Film eligibility list.

Laapataa Ladies is India’s official submission for the 97th Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the list of films eligible for the 97th Oscars in various categories, including Documentary Feature, International Feature and Animated Feature. Among the notable entries is India’s Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies), which has made it to the prestigious International Feature Film eligibility list.

This year, 85 countries have submitted entries for the International Feature category, slightly fewer than the 88 submissions in 2023 and 92 in 2022. Representing India, Laapataa Ladies, produced by Aamir Khan and directed by Kiran Rao, has emerged as a strong contender.

The film, starring Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Chhaya Kadam, and Ravi Kishan, initially received a lukewarm response upon release. However, its gripping storyline and heartfelt performances gradually resonated with audiences, transforming it into a sleeper hit. The film was later selected as India’s official submission for the International Feature Film category at the 2025 Oscars.

Laapataa Ladies narrates a compelling tale set in rural India, exploring themes of gender, identity, and societal expectations with a blend of humour and poignancy. The collaboration between Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, known for their nuanced storytelling, has been lauded by critics and viewers alike, making it a standout choice for India’s Oscars entry.

Other notable films generating buzz in the International Feature category include Brazil’s I’m Still Here, France’s Emilia Pérez, Germany’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, Ireland’s Kneecap, Mexico’s Sujo and Portugal’s Grand Tour.

The Academy will announce the 15-film shortlists for both the International Feature and Documentary Feature categories on December 17, 2024.

The 97th Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, March 2, 2025. As the anticipation builds, Indian cinema enthusiasts and fans of Laapataa Ladies will undoubtedly be hoping for the film to secure a spot on the final shortlist and represent the country on one of the world’s biggest cinematic stages.
