A hearing was held in Allahabad High Court on the demand for holding student union elections in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The High Court has summoned the lawyer of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) over the demand by an AMU student to conduct student union elections in the university.

,

The PIL, filed by LLM student Kaif Hasan, said that by not holding elections since 2019, AMU is violating students’ rights and democratic principles.

A bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and Justice Anish Kumar Gupta heard the case. The petition argues that as per the AMU Act 1920 and the recommendation of the Lyngdoh Committee, AMU is bound to conduct student union elections every year within the prescribed time limit. It was said that AMU has not conducted student union elections in the last six years. The petition said that not holding elections in this manner is a willful disobedience of the Supreme Court’s decision in the case of University of Kerala vs. Council of Principals College Kerala, in which the apex court had emphasized the importance of student union elections.

Received huge grant from UGC, student union money also included

The petition states that the university has received huge grants from the UGC, which also includes funds for the student union. It has not been used.

The petition further states that the students have made representations before the concerned respondent authorities, but there is no decision by the concerned respondent authorities. The PIL petition also emphasizes the importance of the student union, stating that it plays an important role which is not only limited to the welfare of the students but plays a major role in the interest of the public at large.

The PIL states that there are approximately 40,000 students enrolled in AMU and there is a need for a students’ union for proper representation of students’ grievances and other related problems. Because such a large number of students need a voice to represent their respective issues. The PIL has prayed that the AMU management be directed to conduct student union elections as per the recommendation of the Lyngdoh Committee.
