Vidhu Vinod Chopra, whose 1989 film Parinda has earned significant critical acclaim, also discussed the growing conversation around his film 12th Fail.
Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra recently shared his honest views on the National Awards and the representation of thrillers in prestigious ceremonies. Speaking at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Chopra responded to a question about why thrillers don’t often get recognised at the National Awards by stating, “You are giving too much importance to the National Awards.”
Chopra, whose iconic 1989 film Parinda has earned significant critical acclaim, also discussed the growing conversation around his film 12th Fail. The drama, starring Vikrant Massey, received praise for its portrayal of India’s education system, with many, including individuals from Hollywood, suggesting that the film should have been India’s entry to the 2023 Academy Awards instead of the Malayalam film 2018.
Chopra, however, expressed that he didn’t place much value on such recognitions. He said, “Many people have told me, including people in Hollywood, that 12th Fail should have represented India at the Oscars. But do I care? What I care for is-did I make a good film or did I not make a good film? Please don’t give so much importance [to awards]. Awards are people outside of [the industry] who are acknowledging you for God knows whatever reasons. So please don’t bother.”
Despite the debates surrounding awards, Chopra remains focused on his craft and the value of making good cinema. At IFFI, he also showcased his upcoming film Zero Se Restart, which is set to release on December 13, 2024. The film will explore the making of 12th Fail.
In addition, Chopra revealed plans to restore some of his beloved films, including Parinda, 1942: A Love Story, and 3 Idiots, in 8K resolution, which will be theatrically re-released next year.
As for the Oscars 2025, Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry.
