A mob attack on Varanasi policeman was captured by locals on camera which went viral. The police have registered a complaint.

A cop was thrashed by a mob in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi for allegedly smashing his car into an auto on Saturday evening, officials said. The videos captured by the locals showed men blowing punches at the policeman even as his wife and children sat terrified inside the vehicle.

The policeman, who was not in his uniform during the incident, identified himself as Ajit Verma, the Station Head Officer (SHO) of Rajatalab, and pleaded with the crowd not to beat him in front of his family, however, the plea did not make a mark on the mob which continued the assault, until the cops from nearby police station reached the spot and intervened.

How Did The Incident Take Place?

The policeman was travelling in his car with his family when he accidentally hit an auto, drawing the ire of the public. The mob pulled him out of the vehicle and thrashed him. The policeman initially attempted to fight back, however, was outnumbered and dominated by several people.

Another constable present on the spot attempted to help the victim policeman, however, his efforts failed as the mob kept thrashing the SHO using sticks and fists.

The attack stopped only after the police officials from the nearby police station reached the spot and freed him. Both sides have filed complaints against each other to the police.

An investigation into the matter is underway.
