A man from Delhi criticised Bengaluru-based coffee chain Cafe Coffee Day after the staff at one of its outlets refused to serve him a small cappuccino. Manoj Arora, who had dropped his daughter off at a CAT exam centre, visited the SCO Market outlet, which he described as having an unpleasant “fungus smell”. With two hours to spare before his daughter’s exam finished, Arora decided to enjoy the coffee inside the outlet, only to find that they were only offering takeaway cups.

“Came to Gurgaon today to drop my daughter for her CAT exam. I had 2 hours with me, so I thought of relaxing with a coffee and continue writing my upcoming book,” Arora wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a picture of a bill and his large takeaway cappuccino he had to settle for.

Despite the odour inside the outlet, Arora went ahead with his order: “As soon as I entered it, there was a fungus smell all over. I didn’t complain. I asked for a small cappuccino.”

Arora claimed that the staff refused his request, citing that they only had “large takeaway cups” because the ceramic cups were dirty and there was no water to clean them.

Adjusting to the situation, Arora asked for an Americano instead. However, the staff informed him that they could only serve a large coffee in a takeaway cup since the glasses were also unwashed.

“Making one last attempt, I asked, can you give me my small or medium cappuccino in your large cup? They refused to mention that cups are counted,” he said, clearly frustrated.

Ultimately, Arora had no choice but to spend an extra Rs 100 for a large cappuccino. “Left with no choice, I had to take the large one by spending almost an extra Rs 100.”

He concluded his post with the words, “This is Cafe Coffee Day. CCD is dying!”

After reading Arora’s post, an X user Debasis Das commented, “CCD is dead long back. They have not realised yet. The service, coffee quality and food quality is so bad that you won’t go there for a second time….”

“They could have washed the ceramic cup with the steamer option of the coffee machine (unless that also wasn’t working),” chimed in another. To this, Arora replied, “Interestingly, they never run out of big cups. It’s always the small cups. Too much of a coincidence, no?”

A third declared, “CCD has died.”

“With that kind of business ethics, it’s surprising they’re still alive!” quipped a fourth.

A fifth said, “CCD near Jwala Heri, Paschim Vihar, New Delhi The last time I went there, the washroom wasn’t operational. Some items were definitely missing from the menu. And the furniture felt and looked old! Cafe Coffee Day surely is fading away….”

“Sometimes the local staff pull off these cheap thrills to make an extra few bucks without the company being aware of it and that is the worst part about the franchise system. Bringing out these incidents on public forums is the only right move,” yet another X user added.
