Vaibhav Suryavanshi made history as the youngest cricketer ever signed by an IPL team, with the Rajasthan Royals purchasing him for Rs 1.10 crore. Read on to know about the controversy surrounding his age.
IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals bought cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi for Rs 1.10 crore during the mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. At just 13 years and eight months old, Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever to be picked by a franchise. However, it soon led to allegations of age fraud, with some claiming his actual age is 15. Adding to the controversy is an old interview where Suryavanshi’s statement suggest he would be 15 this year.
In an interview in 2023, he told a local news channel that he will turn 14 on September 27 of that year. As the age-related controversy gained momentum online, his father stepped forward to address the allegations, asserting that his son had already undergone BCCI’s bone tests.
His father Sanjiv Suryavanshi told news agency PTI, “When he was 8 and half years old he first appeared for a BCCI bone test. He has already played India U-19. We don’t fear anyone. He can again undergo an age test.”
Hear it from Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s own mouth, he is himself saying that he will become 14 years old on 27th September 2023, so after September 2024 he should be 15 years old now 🤷♂️ pic.twitter.com/lNbQ14YG8y— sohom (@AwaaraHoon) November 25, 2024
It’s worth noting that the practice of listing two birthdays, often for school admissions, is fairly common in India. This sometimes leads to discrepancies between official records and actual ages, fueling speculation in such cases.
