Southgate revealed that the sense of purpose the role of the English gaffer gave him would be difficult to replicate and that he was looking to expand his horizon beyond that of a football coach going forward.
Former England head coach Gareth Southgate, who stepped down from his role at the helm of the Three Lions following their Euro 2024 finals defeat to Spain opened up about his future following his resignation as the English side’s gaffer.
Southgate revealed that the sense of purpose the role of the English gaffer gave him would be difficult to replicate and that he was looking to expand his horizon beyond that of a football coach going forward.

“Every morning I drove through the gates of St George’s Park, I had a responsibility to improve English football,” the former head coach said.
“This higher purpose kept me on track, gave me structure, made my life more fulfilling and is going to be extremely difficult to replicate,” the 54-year-old added.
“It’s why I’m not limiting my future options to remaining as a football coach,” the Englishman continued.
“I’m not the only 50-something contemplating a change of direction,” Southgate added.
Southgate revolutionised the English national side with a strong defensive record, ever since he took over the hot seat following England’s defeat to Iceland in the 2016 Euro.
Southgate led the Three Lions to two consecutive Euro finals, in the years 2020 and 2024, while also steering the English national side to a semifinal in the 2018 World Cup and another quarterfinal finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

England haven’t won any major tournament since the 1966 World Cup success on home soil and were in a rather sorry state before the arrival of Southgate despite their abundance of riches across the field.
England appointed Thomas Tuchel as Southgate’s replacement and tasked the 51-year-old German with building a strong unit capable of challenging for the FIFA World Cup slated to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico in the year 2026.
