ICC Likely To Propose Hybrid Model For Champions Trophy 2025: Report – News18
Last Updated:
According to a report, 10 matches are expected to take place in Pakistan, whereas five matches, which also include one semifinal and the final, will be played away from the country.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to propose a hybrid model for the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy, which is originally scheduled to take place in Pakistan next year. According to a report in Cricbuzz on Wednesday (November 27), the ICC has called a meeting of its board of directors on Friday (November 29) to discuss the ICC Champions Trophy venue after India’s decision to not travel to Pakistan for the eight-team tournament in February-March next year.
Even though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to officially announce the decision of not travelling to Pakistan, it has been reported the board has informed PCB and ICC about its plans.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) time and again has said it will not accept the hybrid model and all the matches will be played in Pakistan, but according to the latest information, a hybrid model featuring 10 games in Pakistan and five in another country—including one semi-final and the final—is expected to be proposed during discussions.
According to the Cricbuzz report, “As a potential compromise, the ICC may strive to minimise the impact of the hybrid model and may agree to host both semifinals and the final in Pakistan itself in the unlikely scenario of India failing to qualify for the last four or last two stages. While such an arrangement would pose serious operational and logistical challenges, this concession might be offered to the PCB given the extraordinary circumstances. The venues will be kept ready in advance with all required hotel and travel bookings.”
The ICC is yet to decide where it will host India matches. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are two potential options, whereas the possibility of having India matches in South Africa can’t be ruled out either.
The report states that PCB is unlikely to accept the hybrid model immediately, but due to the overwhelming majority of the ICC board supporting the proposal, the PCB will not have much choice. There is also a possibility that if the Pakistan Cricket Board rejects the hybrid model, then the ICC board could also propose relocating the entire tournament away from the country.
