An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer has been accused of verbally abusing a resident doctor at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi over his wife’s treatment. The altercation, which occurred on the night of November 24 in the SIC building, led to a temporary suspension of operations in the hospital’s emergency ward. A CCTV clip capturing the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage and calls for action against the officer.

As per a report by The New Indian Express, IPS Anita Roy, wife of IPS Brijendra Kumar Yadav, who is currently serving as the DIG of Armed Police and Training in Puducherry, is admitted to the hospital. She has been receiving care at Safdarjung Hospital following post-surgical complications. Yadav was reportedly dissatisfied with the treatment his wife was receiving and threatened the doctor about his career.

In the now-viral CCTV footage, Yadav can be seen aggressively approaching Dr Lakshya, a resident doctor at the hospital’s surgery department. He is accompanied by a group of policemen. As the video goes on, he points a finger at the doctor and says, “Jitna padhke aaya hai na, uss se dugna main padh chuka hu [I have studied twice as much as you have], so don’t think you are indispensable.”

When Dr Lakshya requested him to speak politely,, “I am talking politely only.”

“The resident doctor was verbally assaulted and threatened regarding his career while assessing the patient on a surgery reference call. My colleagues and seniors expressed their agitation and went to speak with the authorities, but unfortunately, we were not heard satisfactorily and received no response from the concerned consultant in SIC or the hospital authorities. As a result, we were compelled to withdraw our duties in the ER 3 emergency until the issue was properly resolved,” Dr Rajat Gangwar, a senior resident doctor at SIC, Safdarjung told the outlet.

The Residents Doctors’ Association (RDA) of the Safdarjung Hospital condemned the behaviour of the IPS officer and demanded an apology from him.

“Brijendra Kumar Yadav (IPS Officer), and the husband of patient Anita Roy (admitted to the seventh floor of the SIC building), engaged in behaviour that was both disgraceful and unacceptable. Such actions, particularly from a senior government official, are highly condemnable and violate the dignity of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to serve patients,” the RDA said in a statement.

It further read, “This unfortunate incident highlights the repeated challenges and harassment faced by doctors in the line of duty. The RDA demands an apology from Brijendra Kumar Yadav to uphold the morale and dignity of healthcare workers. We also call upon the hospital administration and authorities to ensure accountability for this incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future, reinforcing the safety and respect of healthcare professionals within the hospital premises,” it added.
