‘Presenting Different Narrative’: ISKCON Bangladesh Flags Biased Media Coverage Of Lawyer’s Death – News18
Last Updated:
A lawyer was killed after protests outside a court in Chittagong demanding the release of a Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu.
ISKCON Bangladesh has expressed concerns over the “biased” and “one-sided” reporting by the country’s media outlets over the death of a lawyer during protests outside the country on Tuesday.
According to ISKCON, a group of people caused chaos during the protests, leading to the death of the lawyer. “However, some sections of the Bangladeshi media are presenting a different narrative of the events,” the ISKCON said in a statement.
Saiful Islam Alif, a lawyer, was allegedly hacked to death after the protests by thousands who gathered outside a court in Chittagong demanding the release of an arrested Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, who was later denied bail and sent to jail on charges of sedition.
Massive protests have erupted in Bangladesh over the arrest of the Hindu monk at Dhaka airport on November 25.
Prabhu was denied bail yesterday, leading to further protests by the Hindu community who cited atrocities against them under the Yunus administration.
Chief Advisor to the interim Bangladesh government, Muhammad Yunus, condemned the killing of the lawyer in Chittagong and ordered an investigation into the incident.
Daily Star Claims Attack On Press Freedom
The Daily Star, a daily in Bangladesh, also claimed attack on press freedom under the Yunus administration in the country.
In a detailed statement, the daily highlighted the lack of press freedom in the previous regime and stressed that threats to media are “intensifying” in the present scenario.
“Threats to the media appear to be intensifying in the current political climate, with coordinated campaigns aiming to stoke hostility against media houses that have long stood as pillars of independent journalism. This raises troubling questions about the future of the press in Bangladesh,” it said.
The newspaper stated a mob attacked the head office of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. Last Thursday, the protesters even sat on protests and caused disorder outside the office for several days. On Monday, two of the regional offices of the paper came under attack in which “masked individuals” vandalised the signboard and windows in Bogura.
“…in Rajshahi, a group attempted to break into its office, destroyed its signboard, and burned copies of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star,” the statement said.
