Premier League champions Manchester City are set to travel to Anfield to take on table toppers Liverpool in a blockbuster PL encounter on Sunday, the 1st of December, with a lot riding on the clash of the titans.
PL holders City find themselves in dire straights after their six-match winless streak across competitions, of which three losses came in the English domestic top flight.
Cit midfield general Ilkay Gundogan opined that the fixture against Liverpool could make or break City’s shout for a fifth consecutive league title as Arne Slot’s Merseyside team take an 8-point lead into the game.
When quizzed if the game could have a direct impact on City’s attempt to stay relevant in the title race Gundogan stated that it was definitely a game City couldn’t afford to lose.
“To stay in the title race, probably yes. It’s a game City can’t afford to lose because 11 points would be a huge gap,” said the midfield veteran.
Liverpool stand atop the league table with 31 points from 12 outings thus far in the season, with 9 wins and just a draw and a defeat each. Chasing City have 23 points on the board from 12 outings having won 7 of their assignments, drawn a couple and have lost the other 3.
“Anfield is always tough, no matter the situation. We’ve struggled in recent years going there and we know Liverpool are a great team full of confidence right now,” the former Germany international said.
“It’s going to be as tough as it is possible to be but that sums up the situation right now. It seems we have to go through this season the toughest way possible,” he added.
City’s latest setback came in the UEFA Champions League as the side blew a three-goal lead at home to visiting Feyenoord, who managed a 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium.
Gundogan expressed his dismay following the result but rallied his team to rise up to the challenge citing the unpredictable nature of the sport.
“The sensation right now is a big disappointment but football is football and football sometimes creates incredible moments and difficult moments that you have to face,” Gundogan concluded.
