After days of intense discussions and speculation, the Mahayuti alliance is expected to announce its choice for the new Maharashtra Chief Minister in a crucial meeting tonight.
The meeting, which will take place at Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence in the national capital, will be attended by top leaders from all parties in the alliance.
Among those set to attend are Maharashtra’s caretaker and Shiv Sena Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, former CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar. All three leaders have already arrived in New Delhi for the highly anticipated talks.
The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, achieved a resounding victory in the recent Maharashtra state assembly elections, securing 230 seats in the 288-member assembly. The BJP alone claimed 132 constituencies, its highest ever tally in the state, while its allies Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP also performed strongly, winning 57 and 41 seats, respectively.
In contrast, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance faced a significant setback. The Congress suffered one of its worst performances in Maharashtra, securing just 16 seats, while Sharad Pawar’s NCP(SP) won a mere 10, and Uddhav Thackeray’s UBT faction managed just 20 seats.
The Maharashtra assembly elections were held on November 20, and the results were declared on November 23.
