Allegation of negligence in IVF treatment

Raghavendra Pal Singh, a resident of Dataganj in Badayu district, had come to Bareilly with his wife Rashmi Singh in the hope of better treatment, but the alleged medical negligence during treatment in a private clinic here brought his life to a painful turn. Raghavendra Singh’s wife Rashmi Singh was suffering from the problem of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Doctors advised her to undergo IVF, a procedure used for women facing primary infertility. Doctor Shabina Khan started his treatment in a private clinic in Bareilly.

The victim's family reached the Collectorate to complain to the DM.

The victim’s family reached the Collectorate to complain to the DM.

Treatment began on 15 July, with an ‘ovum pickup’ procedure completed. But during the treatment, due to the alleged negligence of the doctor and wrong medicines, Rashmi had to face a serious condition like Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Due to wrong treatment, both of Rashmi’s kidneys got damaged.

Treatment in AIIMS Delhi, but no relief

When Rashmi’s condition became critical, she was referred to AIIMS, Delhi on July 17. After examination there, the doctors clarified that Rashmi’s kidneys were completely damaged due to the medicines and wrong treatment given by Dr. Shabina Khan. AIIMS experts advised immediate kidney transplant. However, this was not possible due to the financial condition of the family and delays. AIIMS discharged Rashmi on 19 August 2024, and she is now being treated through dialysis in Bareilly. Rashmi’s husband Raghavendra alleged that the doctor’s negligence had put his wife’s life in danger. Now the family is struggling for kidney transplant.

Doctor threatened, legal fight continues

When Raghavendra sought answers from Dr. Shabina Khan on the irregularities in the treatment, the doctor did not give any satisfactory answer. Instead, on October 21, Raghavendra sent a legal notice to the doctor. In response to the notice, the doctor denied any wrongdoing and threatened Raghavendra to withdraw the case on October 25. The doctor also allegedly threatened to kill the family if they pursued the matter further.

Financial and mental suffering of the family

This incident has badly affected the family not only financially but also mentally. Raghavendra told that lakhs of rupees have been spent on the treatment so far, and his wife’s condition is continuously deteriorating. Rashmi has been put on dialysis three times a week, but there is no hope of improvement in her condition. The family is now trying to raise the money needed for a kidney transplant.

Flaws in the medical system exposed due to doctor’s negligence

This case shows the lack of transparency and accountability in the medical sector. In a complex and sensitive process like IVF, even a small mistake by the doctor can prove to be dangerous for the patient’s life. Experts say that in this case, if the doctor had taken the right steps on time and taken the patient’s condition seriously, this would not have happened. Raghavendra says that the doctor’s negligence has brought his wife’s life to the brink of death. Now he is appealing to the administration and the law in the hope of justice. Rashmi’s husband has demanded registration of FIR against the doctor and strict legal action in the matter. He says that to avoid such carelessness, the government should implement strict laws.
