Police arrested four accused, including a constable, for extorting Rs 1 lakh from a person in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia. The accused have been sent to jail.
A constable posted at Narhi police station in Ballia was accused of assaulting a youth in the barracks, fraudulently transferring Rs 1 lakh into another person’s account, and fleeing.
Ballia SP Vikrant Veer, taking cognisance of the matter, suspended two policemen implicated in extorting money from the victim, Rudal Yadav. An FIR has been lodged against both officers.
Yadav, a resident of Bharouli village in the Narhi police station area, met with Ballia SP Vikrant Veer to share his ordeal.
“A case of cow cruelty has been registered against my brother, Nitish Yadav, and the police were searching for him. On November 25, while I was grazing buffaloes outside the village, two policemen from the Narhi police station arrived in plain clothes and forcibly took me to the station. They locked me in the barracks, where they beat me and threatened to implicate me in a false cow slaughter case unless I paid them Rs 1 lakh. To secure my release, I transferred the money to the account of a public service operator, after which they let me go,” Yadav shared.
Ballia ASP Kripa Shankar said that a video regarding the illegal extortion of Rs 1 lakh from Yadav, by Constable Kaushal Paswan and Rishi Raj, posted at Narhi police station, had gone viral on social media.
Following an investigation, and based on the complaint of Yadav, four accused, including Constable Rishi Raj, have been arrested and sent to jail.
A dedicated team of police, including the Special Operations Group (SOG), has been assembled to apprehend an absconding constable, Kaushal Paswan. Authorities are conducting ongoing raids at all suspected locations. They are confident that Paswan will be apprehended shortly and remanded in custody.
Last month, a raid led by the ADG and DIG exposed an illicit extortion scheme involving the illegal extraction of lakhs of rupees from trucks arriving from Bihar. A case was registered against 20 brokers, including Inspector Panne Lal and numerous policemen. All were subsequently jailed.
