Dr Shukla had been conducting gender tests for monetary gain and even offering illegal abortions for Rs 30,000.
In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district, a female doctor was caught red-handed by a joint team of Haryana’s health department and Uttar Pradesh police for conducting illegal gender tests at a hospital in Shamli. The team, acting on a tip-off, raided the Maa Savitri Hospital on Budhana Road, where Dr Neelam Shukla, a BAMS graduate, was performing unauthorised fetal sex determination tests.
The raid unfolded when a woman, posing as a patient, was sent to Dr Shukla’s clinic. After undergoing the ultrasound, the doctor informed the woman that she was carrying a girl child, and charged her Rs 30,000 for the procedure. At the time of the raid, Dr Shukla was found in the hospital’s basement along with a woman and a young man. All three were arrested on the spot.
The health department team also seized the ultrasound machine and recovered cash from the scene. Dr Shukla was running the ultrasound centre at the hospital, although she was not licenced to perform such procedures. The documents for a radiology doctor had been posted at the centre, but that doctor had died three months prior.
Further investigations revealed that Dr Shukla had been conducting gender tests for monetary gain and even offering illegal abortions for Rs 30,000. The identities of two individuals present at the time were also uncovered. An FIR has been filed at the Sadar Kotwali police station in Shamli, and both Dr Shukla and the accomplices are now facing legal action.
Dr Vishwajeet Rathi, nodal officer of the Haryana health department team, explained that the operation began when a pregnant woman, contacted by a midwife, was lured from Gohana, Haryana, to Shamli. The team followed them and conducted the raid, apprehending Dr Shukla while she was performing the gender test.
This incident highlights the ongoing battle against illegal gender determination practices, which remain a serious issue despite being banned under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
