Bank Holidays In December 2024: Banks will remain closed for 17 days in December 2024, including Sundays as well as second and last Saturdays. Most of the bank holidays are in the second half of the month. While some bank holidays will be observed nationwide, some others will be local holidays. Those planning to visit bank branches in December should keep these holidays in mind.
Here’s the RBI’s bank holiday list for December 2024:
December 3: Feast of St. Francis Xavier (Panaji)
December 12: Pa-Togan Nengminja Sangma (Shillong)
December 18: Death Anniversary of U SoSo Tham (Shillong)
December 19: Goa Liberation Day (Panaji)
December 24: Christmas Eve (Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong)
December 25: Christmas (nation-wide holiday)
December 26: Christmas Celebration (Aizawl, Kohima, and Shillong)
December 27: Christmas Celebration (Kohima)
December 30: U Kiang Nangbah (Shillong)
December 31: New Year’s Eve/Lossong/Namsoong (Aizawl and Gangtok)
Regular Bank Closures:
Every Second Saturday (December 14)
Every Fourth Saturday (December 28)
Sundays: December 1, 8, 15, 22, 29
Online banking services will remain available nationwide despite these closures. Even though regular bank branches will be closed on these specific days, online banking services and ATMs will work smoothly.
Meanwhile, bank employees have been raising demand for a 5-day work week. The long-standing proposal is now likely to receive the finance ministry’s final approval soon, according to media reports. As a result of this, bank branches will remain closed on all Saturdays and Sundays, instead of all Sundays and second & fourth Saturdays currently.
An agreement has already been finalised in this regard between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and employee unions.
Bank employee unions have assured that this would not lead to a reduction in customer service hours. To ensure this, the timing will also be revised to extend working hours by nearly 40 minutes.
