It’s a happy sight for ICT fans, as Indian batter Shubman Gill was recorded enjoying himself in a fun fielding drill alongide assistant Abhishek Nayar at practice on Saturday.

Team India registered a stunning 295-run triumph over Australia in the opening Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth to take a surprise 1-0 lead down under.

India managed to pull off the heist despite opting to bench spin twins Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin, skipper Rohit Sharma, and stalwart batter Shubman Gill, who was specifically ruled out due to a thumb injury.

But, the good news follow for India, as Gill was spotted training in the nets, batting his way patiently, and more recently was caught involved in fielding drills alongside assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.

According to the latest available information, Gill is expected to be part of India’s playing XI in Adelaide after showing enough signs of a full recovery from a thumb injury that ruled him out of the first Test.

In the absence of Gill, who has scored three centuries for India in 2024, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal came out to bat at No. 3 in the first Test, but he could only manage to score 0 and 25 runs in two innings.

While Gill is expected to return to India’s playing XI for the second Test, it is not guaranteed that the 25-year-old right-handed batter will bat at his usual No. 3 position. There is a high possibility that KL Rahul, who scored 77 runs in the second innings of the Perth Test, will be asked by the team management to bat at No. 3, and Gill will then come to bat at No. 5.

Meanwhile, Australia suffered a major setback ahead of the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series with star pacer Josh Hazlewood being ruled out of the pink-ball game due to a side strain.

Australia has named two uncapped bowlers on their squad to cover for Hazlewood. Sean Abbot and Brendan Doggett make their way to the squad. In the starting 11, Scott Boland could be gearing up to make a return to Test cricket after playing his last Test in July 2023 in Adelaide.
