Is former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi an ISI stooge created to take over her husband’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)? The question seems to have triggered a buzz in Pakistan amid reports of differences between Khan and his third wife.

Sources told CNN-News18 that Bibi has refused to take instructions from Khan, noting that the former PM wanted her to go to Juman Park after her release but it was a no-show. “Instead of appearing at Juman Park, she was seen in KPK doing nothing. Despite Khan’s clarification that his wife is not a political leader, she released her video recordings,” they said.

They added that her choice of words in videos — Yahudi lobby, Jihad and Sharia — are irrelevant in Khan’s current political fight and except asking people to come to D Chowk on November 24, she spoke on a range of issues but did not utter a word against Pakistan army chief General Asim Munir.

“There are serious allegations about her movement. She gave a scripted speech at D-Chowk and then fled with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur.”

According to sources, the stage is set for Imran Khan’s murder so that the army can say he was killed due to bad prison conditions.

Sources say Bibi’s sudden appearance is a “tactical move” to keep Imran Khan’s party afloat while he remains behind bars. Sources say Bibi left Adiala jail on October 24 but hasn’t visited Khan since or attended her court case.

Khan has been jailed since August 2023, sidelined by dozens of legal cases he claims were confected to prevent his comeback in elections this year marred by rigging allegations. Since the February vote, his party has defied a government crackdown with regular rallies.

However, on Tuesday last week, more than 10,000 protesters surged into the city, defying a lockdown and a ban on public gatherings to skirmish with 20,000 security forces enlisted to turn them back.

Bushra Bibi was released from jail in October, nine months after she was imprisoned alongside her husband in the run-up to elections, becoming the key figure in the resistance.

In the chaos of protests that turned Pakistan’s capital into a battleground, Bibi has emerged as a new figurehead. Since being released from jail, Khan’s third wife has stepped up in his defence and roused his fanatic followers.

“It was assumed that there was an understanding that she is a non-political person, hence she will not be a threat,” analyst Asma Faiz, an associate professor of political science at Lahore University of Management Sciences, told news agency AFP. “However, the events of the last few days have shown a different side of Bushra Bibi.”

A faith healer, Bibi and Khan became close when he turned to her for spiritual guidance in his political career. The pair married in 2018, the same year Khan was elected prime minister after an insurgent campaign.

Khan, in comments made to his team from jail and posted on social media, has however played down her influence. She has “no connection with politics”, he said ahead of the protest. “As she is my wife, she only transmits my messages,” he assured before the demonstrations.
