Veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara opined that Team Indian have a viable option for a skipper in the long run in star pacer Jasprit Bumrah when current captain Rohit Sharma decides to step away from the hot seat.
Bumrah led the touring Indian side to a statement 295-run win over Australia at Perth in the opening Test of the highly-charged Border-Gavaskar Trophy, following Rohit’s decision to give the curtain-riser on paternity leave.
“Bumrah is a viable long-term captaincy option with any doubt,” said Pujara.
“The way he has showed that in difficult circumstances when we had a tough series at home and when you are playing a first Test match in Australia and to put up a show like that.”
India’s win over the Aussies comes as a respite to the Indian side after a humiliating 0-3 defeat to New Zealand on home soil.
Pujara shed light on Bumrah’s character to put the team first, ahead of his unquestionable individual brilliance, and his penchant for helping other others improve.
“I think he has the capability of leading the team and he’s a team’s man,” the 36-year-old said.
“You look at him he never only talks about himself, he talks about the team, the other players. What advice he would give,” Pujara added.
Pujara further shared that Bumrah knows how to hold his tongue in the case of a player on song who doesn’t need any particular input and permits them to be in their own skin, which is a mark of a good leader.
“There are times when players don’t need advice and he accepts it, he says that if there is an experienced player he will keep quiet. That is the sign of a good captain,” Pujara enumerated.
Pujara went on to touch up on Bumrah’s humble nature and the rapport he shares with the players in the dressing room.
“He is very down to earth, very friendly with players in the dressing room and eager to help and he is good person to chat with,” the Saurashtra batter said.
“Even outside of cricket he has a humble personality,” he added.
India take on Australia in the second Test of the BGT slated to be played at Adelaide, beginning on the 6th of December. Designated skipper Rohit has already reached the land down under and will lead the side in the day-night Test set to be played with the pink ball.
