The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) urged British citizens on Tuesday to avoid non-essential travel to certain areas of Bangladesh due to potential risks. Only essential travel to Bangladesh should be considered.

“FCDO advises against all but essential travel to parts of Bangladesh,” the UK Foreign Office said in a press release.

Bangladesh is on the edge following a regime change earlier this year which saw Awami League dethroned from power and replaced by an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, following protests over quota reforms.

It also saw the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, the former prime minister, who fled to India.

But the regime change also saw Islamist hardliner groups rise along with attacks on Hindus, Bangladesh’s largest minority. Attacks have also been carried out on other minority groups like Christians, tribals and adivasis.

The notification from the UK government also comes after Tory Priti Patel, a former home minister, urged the UK parliament to discuss the plight of minorities in Bangladesh in the House of Commons.

The Indian-origin former minister called on the British government to take action to protect the lives of the people in Bangladesh amid rising attacks on Hindus in the country.
