Playing only his 11th Test, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel achieved the feat during the second Test against India at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
On this day (December 4) in 2021, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel created history against India in the Mumbai Test. After Jim Laker and Anil Kumble, Patel became just the third bowler to take all 10 wickets in an innings of a Test match. English off-spinner Laker achieved this feat in 1956 while former India skipper Kumble scripted the record in 1999.
Playing only in his 11th Test, Patel replicated the feat and became a part of an elite list of bowlers. Despite Patel’s brilliance with the ball, the Kiwis failed to clinch a win in the Mumbai Test. India had secured a resounding win by 372 runs in that Test, played at the Wankhede Stadium.
Shubman Gill was the first to fall prey to Ajaz Patel in the first innings of the Mumbai Test. The young Indian opening batter departed scoring 44 runs. Patel then caused a mini-collapse by dismissing the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli, reducing India to 80/3.
Shreyas Iyer also failed to do anything significant as he returned to the dressing room adding 18 runs to the scoreboard. Patel completed his five-for with the dismissal of wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
Ajaz Patel went on to claim the remaining five wickets to complete a historic achievement.
Mayank Agarwal was India’s star performer with the bat in the first innings having played a fine knock of 150. Riding on Agarwal’s sublime batting, India managed to post 325 in the first innings.
Patel finished with figures of 10/119 in the first innings.
But New Zealand batters failed to put up an impressive show as they were bowled out for a paltry total of 62. Ravichandran Ashwin registered a four-wicket haul and earned an upper hand for India.
Ajaz Patel scalped four more wickets in the second innings as India declared having scored 276 runs at the loss of seven wickets.
Chasing a target of 540, New Zealand could manage to reach 167 in the second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin once again excelled with the ball having bagged four wickets in the second innings.
Jayant Yadav also claimed four wickets to earn a solid win for the hosts. Mayank Agarwal was adjudged Player of the Match for his stupendous batting across both innings.
