Srimurali Manohar Town Post Graduate College (TD College) in Ballia once again witnessed a historic moment. Every corner of the city echoed with the sounds of tribute in the all-party meeting organized on the 33rd death anniversary of martyred student leader Chandrabhanu Pandey on Thursday.

Chief guest and SP National Secretary Ram Govind Choudhary paid tribute to Chandrabhanu Pandey and shared experiences of his student life. He said, the martyrdom of Chandrabhanu Pandey will always remain a source of inspiration for the students of Ballia. In his speech, he inspired the student leaders by mentioning the movements and struggles that took place in student life. During the gathering a singer paid tribute through the song “Gumgeen Hui Aankhen Yeh Kaisi Judaai Hai”.

Martyrdom took place during the student movement in 1991

The year of 1991, the date of 5th December. After the death of a Class VII student after being crushed to death by a roadways bus, the students of TD College went on strike to protest against the misbehavior with the body of the police. Chandrabhanu Pandey was leading this movement.

The students demanded that the victim’s family should get compensation and the body should be handed over to the relatives. But during this movement, the police opened fire in front of the district court. Chandrabhanu Pandey was shot and martyred. Since then every year 5th December is celebrated as a memorable and emotional day for Ballia.

Tribute paid by planting trees

After the meeting, the guests planted saplings in the memory of the martyred student leader in the TD College campus. Kadamba saplings were planted, which will keep the memory of the immortal martyr green in the land of Ballia. Many distinguished leaders including MLC Ashutosh Sinha, Fefna MLA Sangram Singh Yadav, Congress District President Umashankar Pathak were present in the meeting.

It was conducted by Student Union General Secretary Amit Singh. The meeting was concluded by former Student Union President Sushil Kumar Pandey (Kanh ji) expressing his gratitude to all the visitors. The day added another inspiring chapter in the history of Ballia, where not only the martyrdom of the student leader was remembered but the youth were also made aware of their duties towards the society.
