Bomb Hoax At Delhi’s 44 Schools: Email Sent From New York’s Utica | Exclusive – News18
Last Updated:
A proxy server was used to send the email. Officials say proxy servers make it tough to trace the IP address and the person who is using it
The email issuing bomb threat to 44 Delhi schools has been sent using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), similar to the earlier cases. The police declared the threats as “hoax” after they did not find anything suspicious. Initial investigation has traced the IP address of the sender to the United States.
According to sources, the IP address was traced to New York’s Utica – a small city with a population of less than a lakh. “A proxy server was used to send the email. A proxy server is a computer server that gives facility to another system to use an indirect network connection to another network service. The person can use a proxy server to send digital files and have the capability to alter digital history as well,” a senior officer involved in the cyber investigation of the case told News18.
The official also said that proxy servers make it tough to trace the IP address and the person who is using it because it bounces the actual IP address.
There is also the possibility of VPN chaining, where multiple VPNs were used to make it almost impossible to trace the sender.
Also, the email was passed through the Gmail server within a few seconds.
The email, with the subject line ‘Bombs in the school’, says: “I planted multiple bombs (lead azide) inside the building. I planted multiple bombs (lead azide) inside the building. The bombs are small and hidden very well. It will not cause very much damage to the building, but many people will be injured when the bombs detonate. You all deserve to suffer and lose limbs. If I do not receive $30,000 I will detonate the bombs. THE GROUP =E2=80=9CKNR=E2=80=9D IS BEHIND THIS ATTACK.”
The schools that received threats included RK Puram’s DPS, Paschim Vihar’s GD Goenka Public School, Mother Mary’s School, British School, Salwan Public School, and Cambridge School, among others.
Delhi chief minister Atishi took on the centre over law and order in the city, stating that the home ministry, under which the Delhi Police functions, has failed in the “sole responsibility” of ensuring security.
