Police jeep surrounded during demonstration
Actually, the students had demonstrated on 06 December regarding the dispute of mosque and tomb. Many alumni who are advocates participated in the students’ demonstration. These people tried to forcibly enter the college campus due to which the peaceful protest turned violent, the police caught some people and put them in the jeep, then the students became furious and surrounded the police jeep. Some people climbed onto the jeep and started shouting slogans. Matters worsened from here. When the pictures of creating ruckus by climbing on the police jeep went viral, some people tagged it with PM and PMO as well as CM Yogi on X. Questions were raised on Iqbal of UP Police and demands were made for the arrest of the accused. Instead of taking direct action in this case, the police surrounded the car of Managing Committee Chairman DP Singh in UP College on 25th November and arrested him for taking him hostage and creating ruckus and sent him to jail.

On November 25, CM Yogi attends the 115th foundation ceremony of UP College. After his departure, the notice issued by Sunni Central Board in the year 2018 regarding the property of UP College goes viral on social media. After the notice went viral, on November 29, more than 500 devotees from Varanasi and surrounding districts reached UP College and offered namaz in the mosque there. Earlier, only 5-10 people used to come there to offer namaz.

The college administration had expressed strong objection to the police administration regarding the presence of a large number of people belonging to a particular religion in the college campus, fearing that the atmosphere would deteriorate. On December 03, the college students had warned the police administration by reciting Hanuman Chalisa 50 meters away from the shrine that if the Muslim side comes to offer namaz, they will also recite Hanuman Chalisa. Amidst the protests, the police had stopped the prayers being held on the campus citing security and exams. Since December 03, namazis are not going to offer namaz inside the campus. Forces have been deployed at every nook and corner from mosque, tomb to college. On December 4, the college received another letter from the Waqf Board in which it was said that the notice related to the claim has been rejected in 2021 itself. On December 06, students demonstrated outside the college campus demanding removal of the mosque from the college campus and not offering namaz. Took out a procession and raised slogans. The same evening, CM Yogi, who came to Varanasi on a two-day visit, had also warned the officials during the meeting that no new tradition should be established in the college campus.

On November 25, CM Yogi had come to UP College for the foundation ceremony of Rajarshi Uday Pratap College. After his departure, the students surrounded the car of college committee chairman DP Singh. They were held hostage and created a ruckus. In this case, Shivpur police had arrested two accused student leaders Sameer Singh and Sunny Singh. There is anger among the students due to the arrest.

Student leader Vivekananda says that some people deliberately distorted the outline of the students’ movement with the intention of hijacking it, due to which the peaceful protest was disrupted. The police had to make an arrest in another case even though they did not want to. In the meeting held under the leadership of Student Union Vice President Prateek Upadhyay, the students expressed anger over the arrest and warned of agitation if the cases against the students are not dropped.
