West Bengal is all set to get a Jagannath Temple in Digha. The temple will open on Akshay Tritiya (April 30) next year.

Chief minister recently Mamata Banerjee visited the temple site, along with chief secretary DG, HIDCO engineers, priests from the Sanatani board and ISKCON Vice-President Radharamana Das.

Banerjee declared that from next year, Digha will also hold a Rath Yatra like Puri.

As a considerable number of Bengalis are devotees of Puri Jagannath Dham, Banerjee came up with this idea in 2019 and the work started in 2022. This temple is being built on a 20-acre plot and its height is similar to Puri Mandir, with a similar structure and flag-posting ritual (Dhwaja ritual). Dhwaja is placed on top of the temple in Puri, this system will also be there. It will also have an additional ‘Radha Krishna Mandir’ and ‘Bimala (Lakshmi) Mandir’.

This temple will have all facilities like Puri. It will have a separate ‘bhog’ arena. Like Puri’s famous ‘khaja’, a special sweet that is offered to Lord Jagannath, Bengal will also offer ‘goja’ (a special sweet). There will be a special entrance, Chaitanya Dwar.

Banerjee reviewed the progress and formed a trustee board which consists of the DM, SP, Radharamana Das, and members of the Sanatani board.

Speaking to the media, Banerjee said, “We are following all rituals. I have also spoken to Rajesh Daityapothi of Puri. We are making the Dwaja system which is there, therefore I have requested them to send a representative for our Mandir. We have more than Rs 250 crore and am happy that our engineers have done it so well.”

“Marble idols are ready, and the tamarind tree idol will also be ready in some days,” said Banerjee. The marble for this temple hasbeen brought from Jaipur and Vietnam, say sources in the administration.

At a time when minorities are being tortured in Bangladesh, Banerjee made Radharamana Das a member of the trustee board, a move welcomed by many. But the opposition has criticised it.

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Suvendu Adhikari said Banerjee is doing this to get Hindu votes. He said, “This is in fear. She wants to get Hindu votes in 2026, which she will not get because under her leadership, Kolkata will become Islamabad very soon. Moreover, she has kept ISKCON there because of this reason only. She has belittled Puri. I felt bad to see Radharamana Das standing there…”

Radharamana Das has been very vocal on the torture of Hindus in Bangladesh. Many believe his presence with Banerjee in Digha is significant.
