Rabi sowing season has started in Rae Bareli district, but farmers are troubled due to shortage of canal water. Especially the farmers of Lalganj and Sareni areas are facing this problem, where due to lack of water in the canals, the fields are not plowed for sowing wheat.

In Lalganj and Sareni area, about 70 percent of the agricultural land is irrigated through canals and streams, but due to unavailability of water, farmers are facing huge difficulties. Farmers say that it is necessary to plow the fields for sowing of wheat and mustard, but due to lack of water this is not possible.

No water in canals, drought in rivers also

Farmers said that water is not being released in the canals, due to which the condition of water in the rivers has also worsened. There is shortage of water in the streams passing through the villages of the area and water is not reaching the tail. Even in the last years, silt cleaning of the canals was done, but the water supply could not be improved. Due to erosion at many places, the irrigation system is being affected.

Farmers’ complaints and expectations from the government

Farmers also told that due to lack of water in the canals, they are irrigating through tube wells, but this system is also limited. He said that he has complained about this problem to the district authorities for the last several years, but till now no concrete solution has been found.

Farmers are now raising the question that if water supply in the canals does not start soon, how will they be able to sow their crops on time and generate their share of the year’s earnings.
