The satellite images were reviewed by Maxar Technologies, confirming the presence of drone ship in the Persian Gulf.
Iran’s new ship capable of launching drones has come to the fore, as per the satellite images reviewed by Maxar Technologies, The Hill reported.
The drone ship was named ‘Shahid Bagheri’ and is presently anchored at the shore of the naval port of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf, according to The Hill which cited Maxar.
The development comes as a number of drones buzzed across northern New Jersey and New York since last month, including near the sensitive US military installations.
The ship was initially a commercial container ship, however, it was converted into a drone carrier vessel for the naval forces of Iran.
The voyage of the Shahid Bagheri began in late November and is now onward into its sea trial, The Hill reported citing Maxar which said that the ship had a net-covered drone on its deck.
There are two other vessels along with the drone ship that appear to be modified similarly – Shahid Mahdavi and Shahid Roudaki – the images showed.
Additional photos supplied by the company reveal the modifications and construction of the ships at a nearby Iranian shipyard. Notable enhancements include the installation of a ski-jump ramp and an angled flight deck, designed to facilitate the launch and recovery of drones.
The Iranian drone ship in the Persian Gulf demonstrates Tehran’s ability to deploy drones, although the vessel is stationed thousands of miles from the U.S. coast, far beyond the reach of even long-range drones.
