Gukesh Dommaraju has made history as the youngest chess champion after defeating China’s Ding Liren to claim the FIDE Chess World Championship title on Thursday, December 12. At just 18 years old, the young chess prodigy has earned admiration from across India for his relentless hard work and perseverance. His victory has caused a stir on social media with countless videos and posts celebrating his incredible achievement. Now, a clip has surfaced online showing Gukesh and his parents during a photo session after he brought the trophy home.
The video, shared on Instagram, captures a heartwarming moment as Gukesh poses with his proud parents, Padma Kumari and Rajinikanth, holding the trophy. As the camera flashes, his mother lovingly embraces him and Gukesh beams with pure joy. She also proudly holds the trophy and the love and pride on both parents’ faces make the moment even more special, leaving viewers delighted.
The clip, which has garnered over 20,000 views, was captioned with, “Moments.”
During the final match, Gukesh’s mother chose to stay away from her phone as she was too nervous to follow the intense game. She did not want to watch her son compete in such a high-stakes match. The atmosphere at home was filled with tension. After Gukesh’s victory, his mother was overwhelmed with emotion and couldn’t hold back her tears. She cried for 10 minutes, struggling to believe her son had just won the prestigious title. This moment of joy also showed the sacrifices his family made to help him achieve his dream of becoming a chess prodigy.
His mother, a microbiologist, was the family’s primary breadwinner after his father, a successful ENT surgeon, stepped away from his career to accompany Gukesh on his chess journey. “It’s a really happy moment, but also one to remember the sacrifices we made, especially Gukesh’s father. Our entire family – grandparents, in-laws, sisters, friends – came forward to help us on this journey. We are grateful to each one of them,” Kumari told PTI.
Gukesh has also shared how his parents made many sacrifices to help him reach where he is today. “We weren’t a very well-off family, so they faced many financial struggles,” Gukesh said after his win. “In 2017 and 2018, things were so tight financially that my parents’ friends had to sponsor me. My parents made significant lifestyle changes just so I could play tournaments. They made the most sacrifices,” he added.
