Aamir Khan revealed why he chose his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, as the director of Laapataa Ladies, India’s official entry to the Oscars.

Aamir Khan, the producer of Laapataa Ladies, India’s official entry to the Oscars, is currently promoting the film in the West. Recently, in an interview with BBC News, the actor revealed why he chose his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, as the director of the movie.

Aamir shared that Kiran’s honest approach to filmmaking was the key reason for his choice. He explained that when he first read the script, Kiran’s name immediately came to mind, as he knew she would bring sincerity to the project. “I think the reason I chose her is because I know she will be honest with it, and that’s what I wanted, and that’s what it needed,” Aamir said.

He elaborated on the importance of honesty in filmmaking, stating that when a director approaches a story with authenticity, the dramatization comes naturally, something he desired for Laapataa Ladies. Aamir further praised Kiran for her creative instincts and her unwavering commitment to the craft.

Despite their professional harmony, Aamir admitted that they had plenty of arguments while working together. “Arguments on the film. Oh yeah! Tons. I mean, we can’t make a film without arguing. We argue every point, and we have strong opinions,” he laughed. However, he clarified that their disagreements were productive and aimed at improving the film. “We tried to convince each other on different occasions how we could better convey a part of the story,” he explained, adding that he left many decisions to Kiran, trusting her instincts as a director.

Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, Aamir expressed gratitude for having Kiran in his life, acknowledging the lessons he learned from her over the 16 years they were together. He also shared that, despite their separation in 2021, they continue to maintain a respectful and loving bond. “She is a great person, and I am not too bad, so we get along well, and we love each other and respect each other,” he said.

For context, Aamir and Kiran met on the set of Lagaan in 2001, married in December 2005, and separated in 2021. They continue to co-parent their son, Azad Rao Khan, and Kiran is often seen attending family gatherings.

Laapataa Ladies tells the story of two newlywed brides whose lives are turned upside down when they are mistakenly exchanged, leading to a series of adventures. The film features Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan in pivotal roles.
