Last Updated:
Bengaluru’s average minimum temperatures remain at 15.7 degrees Celsius, but recent rains have contributed to a significant drop in the mercury.
The city of Bengaluru is set to experience an exceptionally cold December night on Tuesday, breaking a 14-year-old record. The average minimum temperatures are predicted to drop to their lowest since 2010 tomorrow.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that the minimum temperature would drop down to 12 degrees Celsius, the lowest since 2010, according to a report by the Indian Express. The last significant drop in the December temperatures in Bengaluru was on December 24, 2011, when the mercury fell to 12.8 degrees Celsius.
Bengaluru’s average minimum temperatures generally hover around 15.7 degrees Celsius. However, the recorded minimum temperature reached 15.5 degrees on Sunday (December 15). The mercury fell to 14.7 degrees Celsius in the HAL airport region and it reached 14.5 degrees Celsius in the Bengaluru International Airport region.
The IMD forecasts predicted clear skies with fog or mist in some areas during the early morning in the coming days. Maximum temperatures are expected to be around 27 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures will remain around 16 degrees Celsius.
Why Is December So Cold In Bengaluru This Year?
The chilly weather in Bengaluru this year is quite unusual and has been attributed to recent persistent rains caused by low-pressure systems along the coast, which has contributed to this exceptional drop in temperatures this month.
According to IMD’s historical data, the lowest-ever minimum temperature in Bengaluru was recorded at 7.8 degrees Celsius on January 13, 1884. The all-time low temperature in December was recorded at 8.9 degrees in 1883. Between 1980 and 2010, the average minimum temperature in December was 16.2 degrees Celsius.
Bengaluru’s Weather Today

The relative humidity stood at 34 per cent with a partly cloudy forecast throughout the day. Bengaluru’s air quality is recorded at 169 today, which falls under the ‘moderate’ category.
Bengaluru is expected to receive light rain from December 20-24, according to the IMD. Last month, Bengaluru faced waterlogging and minimal traffic disruptions due to rain in several regions. The department also issued a yellow alert for heavy rain on December 18 and 19, warning areas including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and surrounding districts.
