Having been in the Indian music industry for over two decades now, playback singer Harshdeep Kaur has truly proven that a musician’s shelf life is not contained to a limited period but has the potential to be etched in people’s memories forever. With humble beginnings in 2003, it has been over 20 years since Harshdeep Kaur entered the industry, bringing her unique Sufi twist to the typical Bollywood songs. The singer celebrates her 38th birthday today, on Monday, December 16.

1. Harshdeep was born to a family of musicians and she was introduced to music at the very young age of six. While her father was a fine guitarist, she ended up learning Indian classical music from Tejpal Singh and Western classical from George Pullinkala.

2. Before making it into the music industry, Harsheep took part in the MTV Video Gaga Contestant at 16, later even winning the title. In 2008, she won the singing competition Junoon: Kuch Kar Dikhaane Ka, where she was declared the Sufi Ki Sultana.

3. Harshdeep, who belongs to the Sikh community, is seen sporting a turban owing to religious reasons. While she would earlier perform with a dupatta on her head, it was on her brother-in-law’s advice that she switched to a turban.

4. Not many know that Harshdeep played music narrators in Colors TV’s Bani-Ishq Da Kalma, further also appearing in several seasons of Coke Studio in India.

5. In her celebrated musical career over the years, Harshdeep Kaur has proven her mettle as a recognised playback singer. From registering her voice with the serene Ik Onkar from Rang De Basanti to delivering some memorable tracks, she continued molding and experimenting with her music.

Some of her most popular songs include Dilbaro from Alia Bhatt’s Raazi, Katiya Karun from Rockstar composed by AR Rahman, and Gud Naal Ishq Mitha from Sonam Kapoor’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.
