The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Chennai and surrounding areas for the next two days, starting from December 17.
The Meteorological Department said that due to the atmospheric circulation in the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area has formed in the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal. It is reported that it may further strengthen and move towards the coastal areas in a west-northwesterly direction.
As a result, an orange alert has been issued for very heavy rainfall on Tuesday in the districts of Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry, along with heavy rainfall warnings for five other districts.
Rainfall in Chennai
Due to the low-pressure system, rain warning has been issued for Chennai and the surrounding districts of Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur. It has been reported that rainfall will occur across these districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. An orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for December 17 and 18, followed by a heavy rainfall warning for Chennai on December 19.
While no significant rainfall has been observed in many parts of Chennai so far on Tuesday, the Meteorological Department has stated that light rain is likely to begin around 1 pm and gradually intensify, with very heavy rain expected on Wednesday.
The impact of this system is likely to persist until the day after tomorrow, with rain continuing in many parts of Chennai on December 20.
The Meteorological Department has warned that along with Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry will also experience very heavy rainfall on Tuesday.
Tomorrow, December 18, very heavy rainfall is forecast for Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Puducherry. Meanwhile, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal are also likely to experience heavy rainfall.
